EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR — JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Position: Executive Director

Reports to: Board of Directors

Summary: Serves as chief executive officer. Recommends and participates in the

formulation of new policies. Utilizes existing policies as they have been approved by the

Board of Directors to plan, organize, direct and coordinate the staff, programs and

activities of the Chamber of Commerce.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience (three to five years of experience in a chamber/business management)

Good written, verbal and supervisory skills

Proficiency in the use of internet, social media and Microsoft Office Tools

Good management and human resources skills

Ability to supervise, motivate and build a successful team

Aligns performance for success, be results oriented and a strategic thinker

Be an ambassador of the Chamber inside and outside of the workplace

Summary Of Essential Job Functions

Is responsible to the Board of Directors of the Chamber for the administration of the

Chamber Program of Work and budget. The Executive Director shall be empowered to

handle the staffing of the organization within the parameters established by the budget.

Shall maintain a good working relationship with the membership of the Chamber of

Commerce.
 

Finance: Manages the Organization’s finances. Coordinates financial matters with the

Executive Committee as appropriate. Ensures that solid budgeting systems are in place

and prepares and submits an annual budget to the Board for approval. Is responsible for

budget compliance, monthly financial reporting and management of accounts receivable

and payable. Advises Board of financial trends and makes recommendations as

necessary.
 

 

Bylaws & Strategic Plan: Directly accountable to the Chamber Board for the efficient

operation of all Chamber activities and the Chamber office. Implements policies adopted

by the Board of Directors and promulgated through the Chamber Bylaws and Strategic

Plan. Ensures annual goals and objectives align with policies and provides timely and

accurate reports to the Board of progress in meeting goals and objectives. Manages staff,

consultants and volunteers to achieve the goals and objectives of the Chamber.


Marketing & Sales: Works with Marketing Committee to design and implement of a

comprehensive marketing plan that achieves the Chamber annual budget revenue goals.

Manages the design and production of all internal and external marketing tools,

including, but not limited to: Chamber event promotional media, website, newsletter,

membership sales materials, signage, presentation tools & materials, membership

retention tools and volunteer communiqués. Responsible for developing the Annual

Membership Plan — to include goals, calendar and budget — and to ensure plan aligns with

corresponding budget. Manages all event sponsorship and membership acquisition and

retention sales campaigns.


Personnel: Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, management, performance

evaluation and termination of all paid staff, interns and consultants. Establishes and

adjusts staff salaries within the Chamber annual budget and, with staff, designs and

adjusts job descriptions and scopes of employment. Responsible for day-to-day

operations and the effective and efficient management of the Chamber office. Directs and

coordinates all activity of staff in the carrying out of their duties as assigned for all

projects, programs, and major activities of the Chamber of Commerce.
 

Board: Informs the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Officers of the

condition of the Chamber and on other important factors influencing the board. Attends

all meetings of the Board of Directors, and Executive Committee. Shall be responsible to

provide staff support to the Board. Plans, formulates and recommends for the approval of

the Board of Directors basic policies and programs which will further the objectives of

the Chamber of Commerce. Executes all decisions of the Board of Directors not

specifically assigned for execution to another individual. Executes such contracts and

commitments as may be authorized by the Board of Directors or established policies.

Carries out such other general responsibilities as may be delegated by the officers and

Board of Directors. Shall be a member of the Board of Directors and Executive

Committee ex- officio without the right to vote.

 

Committees & Volunteers: Monitors and motivates all Chamber committees. Provides

guidance to the volunteer leadership in the selection of qualified personnel for committee

assignments. Provides Chamber support to committees in the furtherance of their goals

and objectives. Ensures effective communication between Chamber staff, Board of

Directors and committees. Serves as ex-officio member of all committees and coordinates

exchanges between complementary committees. Manages program of volunteer

recognition and appreciation.
 

Membership: Drives membership and retention by working closely with the

Membership and Marketing Committees. Designs and manages membership service

program that provides a broad range of quality deliverables to Chamber constituency.

Establishes effective lines of communication between membership and Chamber office.

Responsible for maintaining accurate records of membership and preparing timely reports

to Board Membership Committee.
 

Community and Public Relations: Responsible for an active, positive Chamber

presence in the community. Represents the Chamber at appropriate public meetings and

with other associations, industry, government, media, public service organization, and

members of the Chamber of Commerce, advocacy for the economic well-being of

Chamber membership and the community. Engages community centers of influence and

elected officials on behalf of Chamber issues. E/D manages Chamber functions and

events. E/D remains informed of current public issues and ensures Chamber involvement

in decision-making processes.
 

Compensation: receives base salary competitive with Directors for Chambers of

Commerce located within the Eastern United States and of 500-999 members. Receives

Management by Objective Bonuses for achieving goals established by Executive

Committee of the Board of Directors. Additionally, earns:

  • -Automobile use allowance
